SueCone with her sheltie

Sonja Nilsen

I began my time with the Mount Diablo Dog Training Club with my sheltie, Cassie in 2002. I loved working with her and learning about the best ways to form a connection.  Since then, I graduated from the Marin Humane Society Behavior Academy, where I gained a comprehensive understanding of canine behavior and effective training techniques.  I have experience with dogs of all shapes and sizes, having worked with the Contra Costa Animal Services department providing behavior analysis and adoption counseling. My journey in the world of dog training has been both rewarding and enlightening. I enjoy teaching puppy classes, family dog classes, trick dog classes, and participating in various dog sports with my own dogs.

My approach to training is centered on fostering a strong relationship and positive connection between you and your dog.  I utilize the LIMA (Least Intrusive, Minimally Aversive) method of training. I firmly believe that building a positive bond is essential for improving skills and achieving lasting success. By focusing on trust and communication, I aim to help both dogs and their owners thrive together.

Training dogs has been my passion for many years, and I am committed to continuing this journey, helping others experience the joy and fulfillment that comes from a deep, meaningful connection with their canine companions.  I look forward to seeing you in class!
